Trustee Recruitment
Join our Board of Trustees and help SOS!SEN continue to support families of children with special educational needs.

We are recruiting a Volunteer Treasurer
Help SOS!SEN build a financially resilient future for families who have children with special educational needs
SOS!SEN is looking for an experienced and committed Volunteer Treasurer who will be a Trustee of the Charity to provide financial oversight, support our day-to-day financial management and help ensure the charity remains financially strong as we grow.
This is an important role within our governance structure. Working closely with our CEO, Bookkeeper and Finance Committee, you will provide oversight of our finances, support the preparation and review of monthly financial information, and help the Board understand our financial position and make informed strategic decisions.
About the role
The Treasurer (Trustee) will provide both day-to-day financial support and strategic financial oversight. You will work closely with our Bookkeeper, who manages the charity’s routine bookkeeping, while providing an additional level of scrutiny, guidance and financial expertise.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing and processing payments and responding to day-to-day financial queries.
- Being available to support the Bookkeeper and other staff with financial matters.
- Supporting the Bookkeeper with month-end journals and the preparation of monthly financial reports.
- Reviewing month-end financial reports and preparing clear commentary on performance, variances and emerging issues for the Finance Committee.
- Identifying financial risks, trends and opportunities and raising these with the CEO and Finance Committee.
- Attending and contributing to Finance Committee meetings.
- Attending relevant Board meetings and providing financial advice and assurance to Trustees.
- Supporting the CEO, Bookkeeper and Trustees with wider financial and strategic matters as they arise.
The role is not intended to replace our Bookkeeper. Instead, the Treasurer will provide oversight, challenge and financial expertise, ensuring that the charity’s financial information is accurate, understood and used effectively.
Time commitment
We want to be clear about the commitment required.
The precise time commitment will vary depending on what is happening within the charity. As a guide, we anticipate approximately one hour per day may be required for payments, emails and other day-to-day queries, with a further 10 hours or so around month-end for financial reporting, review and other matters.
There will also be bi-monthly Finance Committee and approximately 5 annual Board meetings, alongside occasional additional work when specific financial issues arise.
The role therefore requires someone who has regular availability during the working week and sufficient flexibility to respond to financial matters when needed.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for an experienced finance professional who can bring sound judgement, independence and a willingness to get involved.
You will ideally have:
- Significant experience in finance, accountancy or financial management.
- Experience of financial reporting, budgeting and management accounts.
- The ability to analyse financial information and explain it clearly to non-financial colleagues and Trustees.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach.
- The confidence to question information, identify risks and provide constructive challenge.
- An understanding of charity finances and governance would be advantageous, although it is not essential.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and Trustees.
- The time and flexibility to provide regular support throughout the month and deal with month-end responsibilities.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is reliable, approachable and willing to take an active interest in the charity, rather than someone who simply reviews the accounts periodically.
What you will gain
This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a growing charity whose work directly supports families navigating the special educational needs system.
As Treasurer, you will play a key role in ensuring SOS!SEN has the financial resilience, scrutiny and strategic oversight needed to grow sustainably and reach more families.
You will work alongside an engaged Finance Committee and Board, and have the opportunity to use your professional experience to make a tangible difference to the charity’s future.
If you have the financial expertise and time to make a real contribution, we would love to hear from you.
To apply for the role, please email your CV and covering letter to RichardOR@sossen.org.uk Applications close 9th October
